Education

Art  therapy  has formed as a  part of the study  program at the Department  of Curative  Education  at the Faculty  of Education, Comenius  University in Bratislava  since 1967. However,  after the  start of ‘Normalization’,  it was interrupted for twenty  years. The  painter  Roland Hanus  was the first  university teacher  who, along with a Slovak  music  therapy  pioneer, Zlatica  Mátejová, developed  texts on art therapy  techniques in 1984. After the „velvet revolution“ in former Czechoslovakia Jaroslava Šicková- Fabrici sculptor and art therapist has significantly contributed to its establishment in Slovakia in  1991.
Art therapy is taught  as one of the subjects for six terms and ends with the state exam in art therapy.
Although the profession “ art therapist” is not recognized in Slovakia,  postgraduate study program
( PhD )  in art education and art therapy exists. Since 1991  more than 14 doctor degree students have graduated in  art therapy. Since 2000 the organization Terra therapeutica, as well as since  2010 the Institute for Education in art therapy provide 260 hours training for experts from  helping professions as e.g. special and healing educators, psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists and other specialists. The theoretical background of the training is in theoretical and practical issues involved in Spiritual-ecologic existential art therapy ( SEEA Šicková, 1984). Since 2013, the Institute provides also short  term supervision.
There are also few more  other organisations as Artea, Facilitas, Alternativa who offer short terms courses and trainings in art therapy in Slovakia.
