THE STATE OF ART THERAPY IN PORTUGAL

The state of Art Therapy in Iceland

Education

Art Therapy/Psychotherapy training in Portugal is solely provided by SPAT.
  • Level 1: Certificate of Institutional Art Therapist (minimum of 450h training):
– 205h theoretical and practical training
– 40h individual Art Psychotherapy, 130 hours group psychotherapy (53 sessions)
– 40h supervision (53 sessions)
– 100h internship with institutional Art therapy group
– 65h of complementary studies
  • Level 1 +: Certificate of Professional Training in Art Therapy with practice credentials (minimum 1200h training):  
– 450h (completion of Level 1 training)
– 120h supervision and/or Art Psychotherapy (160 sessions)
– 200h clinical work in Art Therapy
– 400h Level 2 training
– 30h complementary studies (essays, conferences, scientific classes, workshops, etc.)
  • Level 2: Certificate of Art Psychotherapist with practice credentials (minimum 2000h training):
- 900h training /theoretical, technical, practical and clinical)
- 200h internship with institutional art-therapy group
- 330h weekly group Art Psychotherapy sessions or 660h of weekly individual art-psychotherapy
- 250h individual Art Psychotherapy (Clinical Practice with minimum 4 patients)
​- 100h Internship in a mental health institution
- 90h Supervision
- 180h complementary studies (essays, conferences, scientific classes, workshops, etc.).
Mid-term and Final Evaluation. Case Study Dissertation.

Art Therapy/Psychotherapy in Portugal is conducted in various settings:
  • medical & psychiatric institutions
  • cancer and chronic disease services
  • schools
  • foster homes and other social institutions
  • rehabilitation facilities
  • prisons
  • geriatric care
  • private practice
  • voluntary agencies
