There is no state recognition for the profession. The BVCT-ABAT is working towards a professional registry to guard good practice. This registry will be implemented soon.
Therapies are used in a methodical way in the treatment of clients with psycho- social, psychological and/or psychiatric problems.
The art therapist works most often in a multidisciplinary team, in a residential or semi-residential settings. Some work in independent ambulatory settings. The number of private practices is slowly rising in Belgium.
Art therapists work with children, adolescents, adults and elderly clients. The specific population depends on the treatment unit.
Depending on the facility and approach there’s individual art therapy, group art therapy or both. In some settings an art therapy group consists of clients from different units at a time.
Sometimes art therapy is part of a structured therapy program, in other cases clients can choose to participate.
