EFAT Conference 2025
Call for Papers
In a world shaped by both creation and crisis, where does art therapy stand? This conference, BETWEEN & BEYOND CREATIVITY and DESTRUCTION, explores the unique role of art therapy in fostering both personal and societal healing, diving deep into its transformative power amidst contemporary challenges.
In light of the 2019 WHO report highlighting the positive impact of the arts on health, the field of art therapy faces an urgent need to assert its unique role, differentiating itself from general arts-based wellness approaches. While the EU is funding initiatives for cultural health policies, and "art therapy" has been co-opted by commercialized self-help outlets, we are called to emphasize the expertise, safety, and clinical efficacy of true art therapy practice. How can we clarify the irreplaceable value that trained art therapists bring, particularly to vulnerable populations? And how does art therapy handle the interplay of creativity and destruction, especially in an era marked by ecological, social, and personal upheaval?
Join us as we examine the complex dynamics of creativity and destruction within art therapy. Together, we’ll:
Let’s engage in a robust exchange on the evolving, essential impact of art therapy on health and healing!

Join us as we examine the complex dynamics of creativity and destruction within art therapy. Together, we’ll:
- Explore the boundaries and intersections of art-as-therapy versus art-psychotherapy.
- Challenge assumptions around the inherently “healing” nature of creative expression.
- Address the clinical and social responsibilities of art therapists in contexts of trauma, crisis, and recovery.
- Share insights into handling destructive impulses, both in clients’ artworks and within therapeutic relationships, and discuss trauma-informed approaches and self-care for therapists.
Let’s engage in a robust exchange on the evolving, essential impact of art therapy on health and healing!
